The narratives explain who needs to take the training, if it is required or recommended, If it is a one-time training or needs to be taken more than once, the format of the training, and provides a link to the training and program webpage.

Aerial/Scissor Lifts
Aerial Lift/Boom Types of Lifts
This course is required for employees who operate aerial lifts during their work. The training consists of two parts – an online module and a document that contains supplemental material specific to Penn State. In addition, your supervisor must provide you with hands-on training and a hands-on evaluation (driving test). Every three years you must have your driving skills re-evaluated.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- If the equipment has a boom (extends the platform outward horizontally from the base of the machine) then you must complete Aerial Lift / Boom Types of Lifts course.
- If the equipment only lifts the platform vertically (straight up and down) then you must complete the Scissor Lift / Single Person Types of Lifts course.
- If you operate both types of equipment then you must complete both courses.
Aerial/Scissor Lift Train the Trainer
This course is a one-time required training for supervisors or other employees who are responsible for conducting hands-on training and evaluations of aerial/scissor lift operators. This instructor-led training involves a review of the PSU Aerial/Scissor Lift program, an overview of the evaluation process, and instructions on how to conduct hands-on training and perform evaluations.

Scissor Lift/Single Person Types of Lifts
This course is required for employees who operate aerial lifts during their work. The training consists of two parts – an online module and a document that contains supplemental material specific to Penn State. In addition, your supervisor must provide you with hands-on training and a hands-on evaluation (driving test). Every three years you must have your driving skills re-evaluated.

This course is required for employees who may encounter Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACM) during their work, such as those that perform custodial, construction, and renovation related activities. Biosafety
Autoclave Safety
This course is an optional, but strongly recommended training for laboratory and research personnel who need to operate autoclaves. The format of the training is an online presentation. Additional hands-on training must also be provided by the supervisor or a knowledgeable person.
Bloodborne Pathogens - Research Personnel
This course is required for anyone working in a research or clinical laboratory that handles human blood, blood products, body fluids, tissues, and/or cell lines. It must be taken at the beginning of employment and annually thereafter. The coure is available online through CITI. Contact the Office for Research Protections (orp-biosafety@psu.edu) if you have questions about applicability or requirements of this training.
Regulated Medical Waste
This course is an optional, but strongly recommended training for laboratory and research personnel who generate, handle, or dispose of regulated medical waste at Penn State. Regulated medical waste includes lab generated waste that has been or could have been in contact with disease causing organisms or recombinant nucleic acids. This includes cultures or stocks of disease causing organisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, and items that have been in contact with human blood or other potentially infectious materials. The format of the training is an online presentation.
Yearly Biosafety Training
This course is required annually by the Office for Research Protections for those working with:
- Infectious agents that require handling above BSL-1
- Research using recombinant DNA technology
- Biohazardous agents, carcinogens, toxins, or toxicants in live animals
- Select agents and toxins
This course covers the basic concepts of biological safety in the laboratory, with special emphasis on the requirements for Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratories. It is available onine through CITI.

Conducting Fire Drills
This is a one-time required training for those individuals who want to lead BEEP exercises for their assigned buildings independently of EHS. The training consists of an instructor-led session which covers how to schedule exercises, equipment needs, communication, coordination, and completion of documentation.

This course is required for employees who work with chemicals and generate wastes from daily operations and projects. Typical employees who need this training include maintenance, utility, auxiliary, housing and food service and janitorial work groups. This training reviews the University's environmental policies and regulatory requirements that govern management practices of handling and storage of chemical wastes. The format of the training is an online module but can be instructor-led specific applications and/or locations. Annual refresher training is required.

Universal Waste: Battery Handling and Disposal
This is recommended training for all employees that handle universal waste specifically batteries and covered under the Chemical Waste Management Plan. By the end of the training you will be familiar with the types of batteries that are considered universal waste, what the regulations are for universal waste, and what is required from you as the individual handling the universal waste. Confined Space
Confined Space
This course is required for employees who may enter, perform, assist and/or supervise work activities within OSHA-defined permit-required confined spaces (PRCS). The course consists of two parts - an online module and a document that contains supplemental material specific to Penn State. In addition hands-on orientation/instruction led by the work unit designee covering the work unit hazards, monitoring, PRCS permit, safety procedures/ equipment, and rescue preparedness supporting safe work within permit-required confined spaces must be completed and documented at the work unit. Work units that perform active entry rescue, must arrange and document separate rescue training. Refresher training may be required if hazards change, or work practices are found to be deficient.

Confined Space Awareness
This course is recommended for personnel that do not enter confined spaces but may be in immediate proximity to such spaces. The training consists of an online PowerPoint presentation which covers types of confined spaces, confined space hazards, controls, and proper confined space entry conditions. This course does NOT comply with OSHA training requirements for personnel working in Permit-Required Confined Spaces.
Crane, Hoist, & Sling Safety
Bridge Crane Operator Training/Evaluation
This training and documented evaluation is a one-time requirement for employees who are required to utilize a Bridge Crane. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that this hands-on training and documented evaluation occur.

This is a one-time required training for employees who operate cranes and hoists. This training covers safe work practices that must be followed when operation of a crane or hoist is necessary. The training consists of two online modules and a supplemental document.

This is a one-time required training for employees who have been designated to conduct annual inspections of slings. This is not intended for sling users. The training covers inspection guidelines.

Driver Safety
Driver Safety Training
This course is required for employees between the ages of 18 and 21 who operate motor vehicles in the course of their work. The training consists of an online module and is required to be completed one time.
Energized Electrical Safety
Electrical Disconnect Operation Safety
This course is required for employees who operate electrical disconnect devices including circuit breakers and fused switches (“knife switches”). Such devices do not include control circuits such as light switches or equipment on/off controls. The training consists of an online module and covers safe work practices and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements. The training is required every three years.

Fall Protection
Fall Protection Equipment Inspector - Competent Person
This is a one-time required training for employees who have been designated to conduct annual fall protection equipment inspections. This is not intended for fall protection users. This instructor-led course covers inspection protocols and recordkeeping requirements.

This course is a one-time requirement for employees who use fall protection devices during their work. The training consists of two parts – this course is Part 1, which is an online module. You must complete both parts to meet your training obligation.

This course is a one-time requirement for employees who use fall protection devices during their work. The training consists of two parts – Part 1 is an online module that is a prerequisite to this course. This course, Part 2, consists of a document that contains supplemental material specific to Penn State and an online module covering Slips, Trips, and Falls. Fixed Ladder Safety System Fall Protection Harness Training
This course is a one-time required training for employees who use fixed ladders equipped with a Ladder Safety System. This type of system requires a fall protection harness to be worn while ascending and descending the ladder. The training consists of an online module and covers information pertaining to proper donning of a fall protection harness and safe work practices.
Fire Prevention and Protection
Fire Safety - Dining Hall Employees
This course is recommended for Housing and Foods Services dining operations employees. This instructor-led training includes fire prevention practices, identification of common fire hazards, evacuation procedures, and review of dining hall fire protection systems. This course is scheduled by H&FS.

This training is a one-time required training for employees who served as Building Emergency Coordinators within their respective Building Emergency Evacuation Plan (BEEP). Fire Safety - General Work Areas
This training course is recommended for employees interested in obtaining information on fire prevention and safety practices applicable to their work areas. The instructor-led training is designed to address specific and general fire safety issues related to a variety of employee work areas including offices, shops, and research/lab areas. Hands-on fire extinguisher training can also be included.
Please note that this course is not appropriate for Resident Assistants, Dining Hall Employees, or Theatre Productions. Alternate fire safety training courses are available which feature content specifically developed for these audiences.

This course is required for all new Resident Assistants (RAs) and Housing Coordinators and is scheduled annually by Residence Life. Fire Safety - Theatre Productions
This course is recommended for employees / students involved with the production of theatre shows. This instructor-led training includes fire prevention practices, identification of common fire hazards found in theatres and crowd management and evacuation. LRN Course Registration Fire Prevention and Protection Program
Portable Fire Extinguisher Training
This course is a one-time required training for employees performing hot work, providing fire watch coverage, or who may be expected to use a fire extinguisher. Although not required, other employees are encouraged to complete this training. The training covers types of fire extinguishers and their safe operation. The format is an online module with an option for a hands-on in-person session upon request.

Safety Monitor Training
This training is a one-time required training for employees who served as Safety Monitors within their respective Building Emergency Evacuation Plan (BEEP). The training consists of PowerPoint slides which cover general evacuation procedures, evacuation maps, and the responsibilities of the Safety Monitor. This information is to be supplemented by specific BEEP plan information provided by the employee’s unit.
Hazard Communication (HazCom)
Hazard Communication (HazCom) Training
This is a one-time required training for employees who use hazardous chemicals. This training is intended for non-laboratory personnel. This program applies to all non-laboratory work areas that utilize hazardous chemicals including, but not limited to, machine shops, maintenance shops, garage areas and janitorial/custodial storage areas. Topics covered include labeling systems, Safety Data Sheets, chemical hazards, and safe work practices.
This is considered Part 1 of HazCom training. Part 2 (work group specific HazCom training) will be provided by your supervisor.
NOTE:
- Chemical use in laboratories is covered by the PSU Laboratory & Research Safety Plan. Work areas/labs currently operating under the PSU Laboratory & Research Safety Plan are exempt from the requirements of this program.
Hazard Communication Supervisor Training
This instructor-led training is intended for supervisors/managers who have been tasked with providing Hazard Communication training to their employees. This training is a one-time requirement and is intended for non-laboratory supervisors. This program applies to all non-laboratory work areas that utilize hazardous chemicals including, but not limited to, machine shops, maintenance shops, garage areas and janitorial/custodial storage areas.
The training consists of a review of the Hazard Communication PowerPoint presentation pertaining to the specific work group/site. The training will provide the participants with a clear understanding of how to edit the presentation to include their site-specific information.
NOTE:
- Chemical use in laboratories is covered by the PSU Laboratory & Research Safety Plan. Work areas/labs currently operating under the PSU Laboratory & Research Safety Plan are exempt from the requirements of this program.

Hearing Conservation
Hearing Conservation
This annual online course is required for employees who are enrolled in the Hearing Conservation Program. Topics covered include the effects of noise on hearing, and the use and care of hearing protection. The course must be completed on an annual basis.

Hot Work Program
Hot Work Training
This course is a one-time required training for employees who perform hot work involving the use of open flame or other equipment that can produce heat and/or sparks. This training covers safe work practices, inspection of work zone, and completion of a Hot Work Permit. The format is an online module with supplemental materials for review. Completion of Fire Extinguisher Training is also required.
Industrial Hygiene
Lead Hazard Awareness Training
This course is a one-time requirement for employees or students who are or may be exposed to lead-containing materials during their work or research. The training consists of an on-line module, and a supplemental document, specific to Penn State.
Annual refresher training is required for employees with lead exposures exceeding the OSHA Action Level. Additional training may also be required for employees exposed to certain lead-containing compounds which may cause skin or eye irritation. Employees should contact their supervisor, safety officer, and the EHS program manager for support and clarification of training requirements specific to their workplace.

Initial Laboratory and Research Safety Training - Non-University Park Locations
This course is a one-time requirement under the Laboratory and Research Safety Plan for everyone who works in a laboratory or supervises research at any Penn State Commonwealth Campus or other non-University Park location. The format of the training is online modules with quizzes. A separate refresher training course is required annually.
Initial Laboratory and Research Safety Training - University Park
This course is a one-time requirement under the Laboratory and Research Safety Plan for everyone who works in a laboratory or supervises research at University Park. The format of the training is online modules with quizzes. A separate refresher training course is required annually.
Laboratory and Research Safety Refresher Training
This course is required under the Penn State Laboratory and Research Safety Plan to be taken annually starting the year after completing the Initial Laboratory and Research Safety Training for everyone who works in a laboratory or supervises research. This refresher training covers all Penn State locations.
PLEASE NOTE: For those taking the course annually, you must click on the link below and “Request” the training each year to open a new instance of the course on your transcript. If you go to the training from your transcript, it will not record the new date for the training on your certificate.
Ladder Safety
Fixed Ladder Safety System Fall Protection Harness Training
This course is a one-time requirement under the PSU Ladder Safety Program for employees who use fixed ladders equipped with a Ladder Safety System. This type of system requires a fall protection harness to be worn while ascending and descending the ladder. The training covers information pertaining to the proper donning of a fall protection harness. The courses "EHS - Ladder Safety Training" and EHS – Fall protection Part 1” are prerequisites to this course.
Ladder Safety Training
This course is a one-time required training for employees who use ladders. This training covers the recognition of possible hazards, inspection, maintenance, storage, and safe use of ladders. It consists of an online module with supplemental material.
NOTES:
- For employees whose ONLY ladder use involves step stools, this training is not required. Instead, please review "Appendix E - Step Stool Safety Awareness" at this webpage: https://ehs.psu.edu/ladder-safety/forms
- For those employees who use fixed ladders equipped with a Ladder Safety System, the additional online course titled: "Fixed Ladder Safety System Fall Protection Harness Training" is also required.
Laser Safety
Laser Fundamentals and Safety
This course is required for anyone who operate lasers during their work. The training consists of online modules and quizzes. In addition, your supervisor must provide you with hands-on training that shall be recorded by a signature sheet to be kept on file with the EHS General Laser Safety Training certificate and other laser safety documentation. This training is a one-time course; and no refresher training is required. If an individual has left Penn State employment for any reason, or any amount of time, and returns to work with lasers, they are required to re-take this course.
Laser Safety Training for Laser Cutters
This course is required for anyone who operate laser cutters during their work. The training consists of an online module and quiz. In addition, your supervisor must provide you with hands-on training that shall be recorded by a signature sheet to be kept on file with the EHS Laser Cutter Safety Training certificate and other laser safety documentation. This training is a one-time course; and no refresher training is required. If an individual has left Penn State employment for any reason, or any amount of time, and returns to work with lasers, they are required to re-take this course.
Lockout/Tagout
Lockout/Tagout Affected Employee Training
This is a one-time required training for employees who operate equipment or are required to work in an area where servicing or maintenance of equipment (lockout/tagout activity) is performed. Safe work practices for working near locked/tagged out energy sources are covered. The training consists of reading a document.
NOTE:
- In order to document completion of the training, you must print out the form and return it to your supervisor.
Lockout/Tagout Authorized Employee
This course is a one-time required training for employees who service equipment that may release any form of hazardous energy. Procedures for safely deenergizing and securing energy sources are covered. The training is instructor-led.

Lockout/Tagout – Overview of the Annual Lockout Tagout Evaluation Process
This training is a one-time requirement intended for supervisors/managers who have been tasked with conducting annual lockout/tagout evaluations of their employees. A review of the evaluation process and recordkeeping requirements will occur. The training is instructor-led.

Machine Shop Safety
Machine Shop Safety Training
Supervisor-provided training is required before employees and students are permitted to perform work utilizing shop equipment. This training is a one-time requirement under the PSU Machine Shop Safety Program and covers safe work practices.
Shop supervisors are responsible for providing the training. EHS does not provide machine shop training.
Listed below are the general requirements for the training along with a link to the Penn State program where supplemental documents can be found:
- “General Shop Information” - (Appendix B) This form is used to provide basic information to the users of the shop. It must be reviewed with shop users and visibly posted inside the shop.
- “General Shop Safety Training” - (Appendix C) Must be provided to any individual who is to operate shop equipment regardless of the hazard category (low, medium, or high). It must be performed within each shop the employee/student utilizes.
- “Equipment Specific Training” – (Appendix D) In addition to General Shop Safety Training, this must also be provided if the shop equipment has been assigned a hazard level of either “medium” or “high”.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - Overview of the Work Group-Specific Training
This course is a one-time requirement for supervisors of employees who utilize personal protective equipment (PPE). Topics covered include developing hazard assessments to determine appropriate PPE and an overview of the PowerPoint presentation used to provide work group specific PPE training to your employees. The format of the training is instructor-led.
NOTES:
- This training is intended for non-laboratory personnel. PPE requirements for research labs, such as those where chemical, radioactive, biological, or reactive processes are conducted, are covered by the Laboratory and Research Safety Plan via the Unit Specific Plan.
- Wood shops, metal shops, maintenance shops, machine shops, and similar areas are not considered research labs and thus fall under the PSU Personal Protective Equipment program.

Pesticide Management
Worker Protection Standard - Handler Training
This course is required for employees who are working in agricultural and research areas and repair pesticide application equipment or otherwise have contact with it. Employees must receive this training before they can work in these facilities. Certified pesticide applicators are the only employees at Penn State who can apply pesticides and are exempt from the training. The format is instructor-led training. This is an annual training requirement.
Worker Protection Standard - Worker Training
This course is required for employees who are working in agricultural and research areas where pesticides have been applied. Employees must receive this training before they can work in these facilities. Certified pesticide applicators are exempt from the training. The format is instructor-led training. This is an annual training requirement.
Powered Industrial Trucks (PIT)
Powered Industrial Truck (Forklift) Training
This is a one-time required training under the PSU Powered Industrial Truck (Forklift) Program for individuals who operate a powered industrial truck. This training covers safe work practices. The training consists of an online module and supplemental material.
NOTE:
- Hands-on training and a documented operator evaluation is required to be completed before you are considered a certified operator for this type of equipment. Contact your supervisor for information on this portion of the training.
Powered Industrial Truck Train-The-Trainer
This course is a one-time requirement under the Powered Industrial Truck (Forklift) Program for supervisors or other employees who are responsible for conducting hands-on training and evaluations of forklift operators.
This instructor-led training involves a review of the Powered Industrial Truck Program, overview of the evaluation process, and instructions on how to conduct a hands-on evaluation.

Process Safety Management
Process Safety Management Function Specific Responsibilities
This course is a one-time required training for employees that are working on or could impact the equipment covered under the University’s Process Safety Management (PSM) program. This instructor-led training involves reviewing the PSM program Elements (e.g., Management of Change, Maintenance Systems, etc.) an employee may impact based on their job responsibilities.
Process Safety Management Overview
This course is a one-time required training for employees that are involved with a Process Safety Management (PSM) covered process as defined by the University. This instructor-led training involves an overview of PSM program requirements and potential activities that would necessitate additional training.
Process Safety Management Overview and Site-Specific Emergency Action Plan Review
This course is an annual training requirement for employees who work on or around Process Safety Management (PSM) covered process equipment. This instructor-led training involves an overview of PSM program, key elements, and site-specific employee responsibilities.
Process Safety Management – Contractor Responsibilities
This course is an annual training requirement for Process Safety Management (PSM) qualified contractor work crews performing work on or around covered process equipment. This instructor-led training involves a review of site-specific contractor responsibilities and Emergency Action Plan requirements prior to working on or around PSM covered process equipment.
Radiation Producing Equipment
Radiation Safety - Cell Tower Radiofrequency Awareness
This course is a one-time training for employees who work on roofs near cell phone towers. The training is site-specific and provided by safety personnel from the cell phone company.

Radiation Safety Education for Radiation Producing Equipment (X-ray) - Part 1
This course is a one-time requirement for employees and students who will be working with or supervising the use of analytical and radiographic X-ray equipment. Part 1 of this training consists of reading material and a quiz. You must also complete Part 2 of this training.
Radiation Safety Education for Radiation Producing Equipment (X-ray) - Part 2
This course is a one-time requirement for employees and students who will be working with or supervising the use of analytical and radiographic X-ray equipment. Part 1, which is a prerequisite for Part 2 was an online module; Part 2 training consists of a hands-on, instructor-led training session.
This training should be supplemented by equipment-specific training provided by the authorized x-ray supervisor or designee.

This course is required for employees and students who will be using electron microscopes. This training consists of reading material. Radioactive Materials
Radionuclide Safety Education (Initial) – Part 1
This course is a one-time requirement for employees and students who will be using radioactive materials. Part 1 of this training consists of reading material and a quiz. You must also complete Part 2 of this training. This course supplements Initial Laboratory & Research Safety Training. This initial training is a one-time course; however, all radiation workers at Penn State are required to take Radionuclide Safety Education (Refresher) training annually.
Radionuclide Safety Education (Initial) – Part 2
This course is a one-time requirement for employees and students who will be using radioactive materials. Part 1, which is a prerequisite for Part 2 was an online module; Part 2 training consists of a hands-on, instructor-led training session. The training is to be supplemented by room and equipment specific training for the space where the trainee will be using radioactive materials. All radiation workers at Penn State are required to take Radionuclide Safety Education (Refresher) training annually.
Radionuclide Safety Education (Refresher)
This course is required for employees and students who will be using radioactive materials. The training format for this refresher training may vary from year to year and will be determined by the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), in consultation with EHS leadership and the University Isotopes Committee. This refresher training is part of the annual training necessary to maintain radiation worker qualification.
Regulated Medical Waste Management
Autoclave Safety
This course is an optional, but strongly recommended training for laboratory and research personnel who need to operate autoclaves. The format of the training is an online presentation. Additional hands-on training must also be provided by the supervisor or a knowledgeable person.

Regulated Medical Waste
This course is an optional, but strongly recommended training for laboratory and research personnel who generate, handle, or dispose of regulated medical waste at Penn State. Regulated medical waste includes lab generated waste that has been or could have been in contact with disease causing organisms or recombinant nucleic acids. This includes cultures or stocks of disease-causing organisms including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, and items that have been in contact with human blood or other potentially infectious materials. The format of the training is an online presentation.

Respirable Crystalline Silica
Respirable Crystalline Silica
The Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) is a one-time required course for employees who work with RCS materials, and thus may have potential exposure to RCS. Additional training may be required for employees working with RCS materials, who are also required to use specialized control measures and equipment to limit their exposure to RCS. This additional education is coordinated through the employee's work unit supervisor and/or safety officer.
Respiratory Protection
Respiratory Protection
This course is required for employees and students whose work has been assessed by the work unit safety officer and EHS respiratory protection program manager, and who has been medically cleared and respirator fit-tested to use the intended respiratory protection. Training requires completion of an online module, with review of supplemental material specific to Penn State, and a final, documented hands-on review with the work unit Safety Officer, or other authorized designee.
Annual refresher training is required and consists of reviewing the online module and supplemental materials. Refresher training may additionally include a documented hands-on review by the employee with completion of documentation form, as scheduled with the work unit safety officer or designee.

This is a one-time required training under the Scaffold Safety Program for employees who perform work on/use scaffolds. This training covers safe work practices. Training is required before employees are permitted to work on/use a scaffold. The training consists of an online module.

This course is a one-time requirement for employees who will be driving into, out of, or within the Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine Zone (with the exception of those just stopping for refueling or traffic control). The format of the training is an online module.

Theater Rigging Equipment Inspection Program
Theater Rigging Equipment Inspection Program
This training is a one-time requirement under the Theatre Rigging Equipment Inspection Program. Training is required before employees are permitted to perform the annual inspections of theatre rigging systems.
Supervisors (or Stage Steward/Technical Director/Theatre Facility Manager/Faculty/Staff Member) are responsible for ensuring training is provided. EHS does not provide this training.
Listed below are the general requirements for the training along with a link to the Penn State program:
- A review of the appendices of this program that apply to the type of rigging system;
- A hands-on review/walk-through of the rigging system(s) in order to become familiar with the components and;
- An explanation of the criteria for each component that can be used to determine if it passes or fails an inspection.

This course is a one-time required training for PSU students (non-paid) who have the potential to work inside of trenches/excavations reaching 5 feet in depth. Procedures for creating a safe trench/excavation as well as safe work practices are covered. The training consists of an online module and supplemental material.

This course is a one-time required training for employees who have the potential to work inside of trenches/excavations reaching 5 feet in depth. Procedures for creating a safe trench/excavation as well as safe work practices are covered. The training is instructor-led via a 3rd party trainer.
